General guidelines for the practice of Kriyas
- There are six cleansing processes are described in Hatha Yoga Texts. These are Neti, Dhauti, Basti, Trataka, Nauli and Kapalabhati.
- Kriyas require the use of Water, Air and manipulation of organ of the body.
- Kriyas should be done empty stomach and therefore preferably in the morning.
- Luke warm water and salt should be used for Vamana Dhauti and Jala Neti.
General Guide lines for the practice of Asanas
- Sequence of practice should be kriyas, asana, Pranayama, meditation.
- Asana starting with supine, prone , sitting, standing position then in the last you can
Give breathing practices, relaxation and meditation.
- Asana must not be practiced in haste or by applying any sort of force.
- Attain final position step by step and maintain with closed eyes is beneficial for
Experience.
- Always try to focus your attention on the influenced body part.
- Relax in between two postures and attend your breathing.
- In the beginning maintenance time of asana should be 10 sec. gradually increase.
General Guide lines for the practice of Pranayama
- Pranayama should be done after the practice of Asana.
- In the beginning one should be aware about natural flow of the breathing
- Make inhalation and exhalation longer with the deep breathing technique.
- While observing breathing attend to your abdominal movement which bulges out during inhalation and goes in during exhalation.
- In the beginning stage learn to maintain 1:2 ratio of breathing which means Exhalation time should be double than inhalation.
- After long period of practice of 1:2 ratios, one should learn the retention of breath under the guidance of a competent teacher.
General Guide lines for the practice of Meditation
- Practice of Asana and Pranayama will help in developing ability to sit in one position for a considerable period of time.
- Select a peaceful calm and quite place for the practice of Meditation
- Close your eyes which will help you to bring your mind nearer to your self.
- In the first stage, keep all the body parts without any strain. Sit straight with head, neck and trunk in one line.
- Body should not bend forward or backward. Head should be kept straight
- Observe your natural flow of breath which will help you to make you more attentive.
- Silently continue this process for sometime.
- In the beginning, if it is difficult to observe the breath, it is advised to focus your gaze at the object (such as flower, candle, dot on the wall etc) outside with open eyes.
